Yoga — and life, for that matter — takes effort. A conscious practice is we must gift to ourselves again and again. We are the only ones living in our bodies so we must work to uncover the patterns our bodies consciously and unconsciously create. Nobody can do it for us. We must work, knowing that through dedication and repetition we will revolve and evolve, shaping our lives into something of a more connected, functional, and joyful state of being.
What we do on the mat mirrors what we do in life. We can address the patterns in our lives via the patterns in our bodies. What we love about this practice is the ability to use our physical geometry, physiology, and neurology to not only inform and re-inform our poses, but to inform and re-inform ourselves as well. This is where the magic can be found.
We do this practice as a community because connecting with people gives us a little more information, a different frame of reference, and a greater understanding and enhancement of ourselves as a whole. Life is not a journey meant to be undertaken alone, and the more tools we have, the more equipped we are to deal with what life throws our way.
We recognize each of our teachers for their integration of education, training, life experiences, and interests. At Alula Collective, we weave the strands of these together, employing a framework that is both rooted in Katonah Yoga, Taoism and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and also something else entirely unique to itself. It’s what we believe works.

Organizing yourself through proper measure and technique is where the magic is found; it is how we see our bodies transform. It is through proper alignment that your body finds support to change how it functions. This class weaves theory, sacred geometry, Chinese Medicine, pranayama, and formal archetypes to create an incredibly dynamic practice inspired by Katonah Yoga®. The last sentence runs-on just a tad, so for your consideration: if we open ourselves up to change, we see growth. We create an open state for energy to flow, our bodies to change, and a higher vision to be seen, ultimately cultivating more joy in life.
This is the perfect complement to any practice. We slow down the measure, the technique and we get back to the foundations of the practice and poses. This is a slower version of Alula Yoga and is great for all levels, especially those new to Alula Yoga.
This is Alula Yoga with a little more flow, a little more movement with breath, and maybe a chaturanga or two. Or at least our version of one. This class is a hybrid of our alula Yoga and Vinyasa.
Slow it down and support function. This is a practice to support the nervous system utilizing time, breath, and props. The use of heavy props and boundaries helps release the effort into a greater sense of ease so the mind and body can find a deeper state of rest. An integration of classic restorative, pranayama, and Alula Yoga.
Liver feeds heart, heart nurtures spleen, spleen mothers lungs, lungs nurture kidneys, and kidneys repeat the cycle by feeding the liver. Our favorite way to blend the classic Yin method with Alula. Passive posturing coupled with generous hold times create strength and resiliency in the tissues, and keep energy flowing without interruption. Based on principles of TCM and inspired by Katonah methodology, this class explores the boundaries of body and mind, and looks to create harmony in the systems to support overall functionality.

This 45 minute Pilates class will cover the classical, mat-based exercises as developed by Joseph Pilates. Designed to create a full body workout using only the floor and gravity, Mat Pilates is a simple but powerful way to create strength, flexibility, and improved alignment. All bodies and skill levels welcome! It is the perfect compliment to any of our yoga classes here at ALULA.
ALULA Tai Chi
Rooted in martial arts, Tai Chi weaves together balance, meditation, energy flow, and breath work. The movements have practical application in defense training but are primarily utilized to move energy or qi throughout the body and to become a moving meditation in order to improve overall health of mind, body, and spirit.
ALULA Pranayama + Meditation
It takes a multitude of techniques to support the body. We need the tools to calm us, to energize us, to stimulate us, to support different functions of the body. You wouldn’t sit in a house that is on fire, right? This first part of class will take you through several breath techniques to cool things off, clean things up, and organize the mind and body. You’ll clear space to finish the practice in a guided meditation. This 45 minute class is designed to expand on the pranayama and meditation techniques in our regular classes and is for everyone and anyone!
Katonah Yoga® is a syncretic Hatha yoga practice developed by Nevine Michaan over 40 years. She and her teachers incorporate classical Hatha yoga with Taoist theory, geometry, magic, mythology, metaphor, and imagination — in a practical framework designed to potentiate personal and communal well-being. Framing the practice, maps of time and personal space are defined and refined. Themes using asana as origami, manipulating form for function, and developing a sense of personal measure are incorporated into Katonah Yoga practices.
Katonah yoga is organized around 3 principles of esoteric dialogue: all polarities are mediated by trinity; the universe has pattern, pattern belies intelligence; by virtue of repetition there is potential for insight. Disciplined techniques are organized by revelation through revolutions.
